Course Goals

course is designed to help English Language Learners (ELL) attain high-intermediate-level reading, listening, and speaking skills in order to understand more clearly and communicate more effectively in English.

Core Course Topics

  1. Reading comprehension strategies including connecting, questioning, predicting, visualizing, and summarizing

  2. Locating and identifying topics, main ideas, supporting details and patterns of organization in authentic written and audio sources

  3. Author’s or speaker’s message, audience, purpose and tone

  4. Textbook reading strategies, guided note taking and active learning strategies with written and audio sources

  5. Vocabulary study and idioms

  6. Academic discussion and presentation skills

  7. American cultural literacy

  8. Source credibility

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

Apply a variety of reading comprehension strategies including, but not limited to, connecting, questioning, predicting, visualizing, paraphrasing and summarizing.

Discriminate between topics, main ideas, supporting details within various patterns of organization in authentic written and audio fiction and non-fiction sources.

Show written and verbal evidence of ability to read and listen critically and analyze the authors message, audience, purpose and tone.

Show evidence of the ability to use a range of study skills in an American classroom.

Illustrate increased vocabulary and idiom knowledge.

Design and facilitate academic presentations and discussions.

Demonstrate American cultural literacy.

Recognize and practice researching credible sources.
